Is Hasbro Marvel Legends Increasing in price?! - 2/19/08
    From: Gothneo

Rumors are flying all around the web that the New Hasbro Hulk Marvel legends are going to raise the MSRP to $15 ea!!!

That would be a whopping 50% increase in price if they did!

What will that mean to everyone as a collector?

at $15 that puts these on the same price point with current speciality shop items like DST or DCD... that seems odd to me!!

If the Hulk Wave sells at this price point will other Marvel products soon follow?

I think I'm going to have to start being picky about what character I will purchase at that price!

Hopefully this is just a bad rumor!

    WRESTIING RUMOR! - 1/26/08
    From Pro-Wrestling Insider:
WWE's action figure deal with Jakks Pacific ends in 2009 and there is talk that Hasbro might make an offer to land the WWE license, or the TNA license. Hasbro currently makes the Star Wars and Transformers figures.

    Does anyone have an opinion?
    Editor Umpire

    Monkey_of_Doom

I dont care if Hasbro gets the WWE license but I would prefer the TNA license stay with Toy Biz.
NEW YORK OFFICALLY SUCKS! - 11/19/07

**Thats right, I said it. The Big Apple sucks. I hit Toys R Us Times Square today, what a spectacle. A giant ferris wheel right as you walk in. A life size T-rex in the action figure section. Jack Sparrow, King King and the empire state building, all made out of Legos. A 2 story Barbie house you can walk inside to shop for everything thing Barbie. 3 floors of toys......

All this and not a single marvel legend in sight. No LCBH figures except a tiny display by the register with only O'Brien and a few series 1 figures left. Wait, they did have a few HML in a giant discount bin, filled with a selection of 3 different figures, any guesses???? Thats right, Pale Banshee, Emma Frost, and the infamous TRU Diamond Emma Exclusive. Thats it. Thats all they had. They did have a decent McFarlane section, but that was about it.

Then headed towards Central Park and hit FAO Shwartz. This is the store made famous by the movie Big, you know with Tom Hanks and the giant piano. You know how it looked all fun in that movie? Well, guess what, more Hollywood lies!!! They had a huge Harry Potter themed section. A tiny Star Wars section. Not a single Marvel figure in sight. They did have the 13" DC Direct catwoman, lex luthor and martian manhunter. But that was it. Oh, they did have McFarlane Twisted X-mas. They had an entire display, with about 100 figures. Guess which one they didn't have? Yep, sexy Mrs. Claus was no where to be found. I think they decided not to put her out, since she is a risque figure.

The one saving grace so far, is right around the corner from my family's house where I am staying. A local comic shop! He has an entire wall of figures. DC Direct, Marvel Legends, Marvel Select, and the list goes on and on. I will definitely be hitting his shop before i leave. And I have yet to find a Wally World to check for the HML 2 packs. The local target was completely devoid of almost any figures of anything.

So, for the record, New York sucks harder than my little crap town of Clermont, Florida!

**with all due respect, if you're knocking NYC, you have NO idea what you're talking about.........

    1st:
if this is your first visit here, you don't know what typically goes on here.
it's true Times Square hasn't had legends in months, they got screwed out of series 2. BUT-- do you know anyone who found series 2 at a TRU anywhere in the united states? i'm hearing they're only now hitting target!

yes, legends 3 is hitting *wal-mart*. they STILL have not hit target, nor TRU, nor Kaybee, *BUT* did you stop to think these are the weeks before the holiday rushes? you think the retailers are going to put out valuable stock now, that are 100% guaranteed sales during that financially critical period after thanksgiving? do you think the retailers are thinking of YOU, or would rather bet on the parents? their stock is seen as numbers only, not collectors market vs. "parents buying for kids". so every year, the retailers hold back at this time of year banking on parents and that 6am, black-friday rush, and then a month of solid sales to offset any losses during the year. the retailers win by making you wait for their timetable, not indulging yours.

TRU Times Square is guaranteed better than your local TRU. there isn't a person here who can't get what they want-- variants included. even the local collector community is generally helpful to one another and looks out for each other. it isn't at all like the old days! and as the country's top flagship, TRU TS gets waaay more of everything when they do get it. hands down.

admittedly, there are some recent corporate management kinks that need to be addressed there, but in general, it's all business as usual and it will all be fine.

and if you're going to knock FAO-- an almost bankrupt company forced to close most of its stores-- based on a hugely succesful run because of a 20 year old film ("big" was released in 1988!) than frankly, you're out of your mind and aren't keeping up with current events.

i've followed your posts MOD, and you're a valuable member to the board. but don't ever knock my town as a whole just because you can't indulge yourself on this nonsensical, insignificant little hobby of ours...
otherwise, you're welcome to stay in -- HAH!-- clermont, FL.

am i taking your knock on NYC personal?
    absolutely.
let's drop the city-knocks and be collector-friends before i take you to the mat on this!

    all the best,
and have a great day :D

**FAO, they have been on the verge of bankruptcy since 2001 when I graduated from College and was working for TRU as a seasonal job around this same time frame. That was just after the FAO CEO switched over to TRU and gave them their new convoluted floor layout, instead of the much friendlier and easier to find product style of aisles. So believe me, I know whats going on.

If you took the knock on NYC personally, sorry. It was a simple objective opinion based on what was available at the supposedly premier toy store in this hemisphere vs the local comic shop. And please, as I've explained this to ???man, read my posts with a bit of lightheartedness. My posts are littered and laced and glazed over with sarcasm. I like your fair city and enjoyed many hours of fun so far. Maybe after Thanksgiving, I will find some better stuff. And I am not collecting just for me, as I have stated in nearly all of my posts, me and my son collect together. He wants to see HML 3 up close and also a few of the LCBH too. Most of my collecting involves finding figures he will like. On occasion I will buy a 2nd for myself or ones that only I want. But for the most part, of the dozens and dozens of figures I've bought, my son and even my daughter have retained 95% of them. My daughter loves the girl figures and even some of the guys.

Come down to Clermont, and enjoy yourself before you jump on my crappy little town. At least I visited yours before passing judgment.

    Name:RXW67

**all the comic shops almost always get their stuff first up here. almost always-- there's exceptions. if you went to the one i think you did, they usually are the most on the ball out of the ones around here, but they fall behind once in awhile too.

and i'm not saying i agree with TRU's decision to hold back product, but i know after years of going and plenty of conversations with the people there, what their rationale is. does it make sense? yes. does it make no sense? the answer is also yes. from their position, what to do?

as the NYC collectors could also tell you, TS often-- for whatever reason-- gets stuff after everybody else. the TRU's in queens, brooklyn, bronx-- all get theirs first. TS is treated differently by TRU management and the retailers. but when stuff finally hits the floor at TS, it does so in far, far, far greater numbers than anywhere else. (all the ephant mons from star wars that nobody could find? guess where they were. take your pick of any line's rare pieces. guess where they are) don't forget: thousands of travelers also go through there daily, often getting all the product cheaper than in their own countries.

as far as the FAO CEO switchover: the word is it's now the former target CEO in charge of TRU, who is getting the point a year(?) later. there's a universal opinion among TRU's employees that have been letting him know that TRU spent far too much on that singular store to reduce it's product availability to that of an average store. but they do have waaaaay more stock than they can put out at any one time, and can also order and reorder it quicker than any other store-- but only when they're ready. i know from personal experience of putting in direct requests to the right people there.

i'm glad you're collecting for your kids as much as yourself. i truly wish i could say the same, as i hoped i could watch any kids i might have one day open alot of the stuff i collected over the years. but now, it's a few years later and my short-term goals have changed just a little bit....! but i can say, with almost certainty-- after working with kids of all ages on various occassions--, that the average kid isn't usually so fixed on particular items-- in this case specific toy lines-- that they would universally condemn an entire place! that expression of angst is more typically an adult response, and one thing that irks me are the collectors up here who don't have patience and voice an air of entitlement that the companies owe them toys at a particular time. it reminds me of spoiled kids. i'm not saying that's you since i don't know you. but i know others up here, as well as others that have presented themselves on the boards, who have acted similarly, and what they're all about.

the truth is, we're all spoiled by immediate information. 15 years ago, 20 years ago-- there weren't internet reports that fueled our anxieties and increased our anticipations and desires into a fever. literally, a fever!
i've seen grown guys up here go crazy expecting toys, and lose their temper having real tantrums on regular workers-- good people who aren't doing anything wrong-- because they can't get what they want. back in the days when ignorance of what was going on in other markets kept us patient, and pleasantly surprised to find something-- i miss those!

and i really won't jump on your town. actually i grew up in florida. it's just that after having lived here for almost as many years as i grew up there, i'm far more attached to this place! i routinely defend this place-- whatever town i'm in, in any and every country i've ever been to. after hearing all the ignorance about new york after having been around, i can say there's far more access to making one's self happy and fulfilling absolutely EVERYTHING one could hope for here more than anywhere else-- with maybe paris, shanghai, tokyo, and hong kong excepted.

so i'm absolutely cool with you MOD, and while i'm relatively not as active on the board as others, i appreciate all you do to help our other collectors and the community here!
i hope the next time you come through here (NYC), that you find what it is you're looking for!

alll the best to your family,
    have a great thanksgiving!

MORE TOYS RECALLED... WHO'S TO BLAME? - 11/08/07
Toy Armageddon... More Chinese Toy Problems!
Mattel recalls millions of toys over the summer, baby toys, small magnets that get stuck in the gut, and lead paint covering the world like a Sheman-Williams ad! Now Aqua Dots when ingested turn into a date rape drug!?! What is going on in the marketplace?

Lack of oversight, at home and abroad. A Consumer Protection Agency that obviously doesn't protect, and companies, like Mattel, apologizing to the Chinese for the heat they are getting. Some might say deservedly so. Remember the dog food recalls, and recalls on toothpaste? for the sake of cheaper manufacturing and shoddy controls, children have died or been seriously injured.

I would like to know whay you think. With only 47 days until Christmas what are your feelings about purchasing Chinese made items? Do you care? This problem is not getting smaller, it's actually increasing as we find more and more products that contain choking hazards and lead content problems.

How confident are you that your toys are safe?

POST A REPLY IN OUR BLOG: HERE! and scroll down to the Overheard section of the blog and let all of us know how you feel!

IS THIS THE END OF LEGENDARY COMIC BOOK HEROES??? - 11/01/07
    Name: Gothneo

    LCBH.... We barely knew ye?!
Not sure what's going on with Legendary Heroes Line, but I have to say I'm a bit worried that we will see much more!

I noticed that a number of online retailers that had Wave 3 (and some even had wave 4) up for pre-order no longer list them!

    Such retailers include;

BBTS, CMD Store, Legends, & CSC

The next two waves are rumored to be as follows:

    Series 3:
    Mean Machine
    Vanguard
    Aphrodite IX
    Conan
    Nexus
    Grendel Prime

    Series 4:
    Ghost
    Hunter Rose Grendel
    Rogue Tropper
    King Kull
    Ian Notingham
    Barbaric

Not sure who most of the Rumored line up in Series 4 are, (but I would like a King Kull!!!)

But based on seeing a number of Wal-marts clearance out Wave 1, and less distribution of Wave 2... I'm starting to wonder if we'll get S3 let alone S4!

Bent Card Blues...(Jerks in the aisles!) - 10/03/07
Umpire writes: I visited my local TRU this afternoon looking to see if there was anything new on the Star Wars rack, when I found some gold coin figures from the first wave of the TAC (the first ones I have seen,) and all the cards corners were bent!

Sure, this is a little thing, but let’s look at it a little closer. Someone picked up the cards, and didn’t buy them, but defaced them so another collector wouldn’t get a unspoiled backer card. See this wouldn’t hurt a kid who is just going to rip open the package, it goes against the adult collector. I don’t get it. Is this the modern day equivalent of Robin Hood, but in this case he’s keeping toys available for little kids? Making toys unattractive to collectors that would value a straight card back?

These are Star Wars toys, and the days are over when anyone thinks he is going to sell off his collection and send their kid to a fine Ivy League school.

So, there is no profit motive in defacing the card. Nobody is going to think your fresh from the case figure is going to become harder to find and thus be worth more. The only guy getting hurt is a fellow collector. One that places value on an mint card because he wants it. Not for what it’s worth on the secondary market. So, it’s a little creepy to be such a worthless pig as to negatively impact some guy who’s only sin is that he collects toys and buys mint cards...

It’s not just general assholery, it’s just plain evil.

**The auction clearly states in the very first line it's a custom. If it hadn't stated it's a custom, I would've guessed that it was a test shot for the variant. Clear figures are usually cast in clear red or blue to show imperfections in the mold, which can be harded to see in the transparent plastic.

Then (it sounds like) the hackers managed to hijack the domain name and get it moved, and they relaunced the site with trojans embedded to attempt to download them to anyone that went to the fake site.

I think it's basically down for awhile till they can try and recover it... I'm betting that they will need to do a complete re-launch... but that's just a hunch.

Is there any point to DC Direct? - 8/17/07

    Name: BIGBOY

**Hey now Mattel are wipping Ass with their DCSH series, do we still need DC Direct?

I collected around 30 or so DC Direct figs and out of that number around a 3rd broke - some right out of the packet!

With Dc Dierct having limited articulation and fairly pricey can they survive producing their standard figure?

    Name:Gothneo

**Normally I'd say that people who prefer more of a good sculpt over articulation would want to stick with DCD. But after seeing the next few waves of DCSH, I'm off the DCD wagon for good.

Maybe DCD saw the writing on the wall and is the reason why they went with all the artist specific lines. I suspect this is what they have/will de-evolve to.

Personally. I'm done with DCD. My interest had been wanning anyway over the last couple of years, but now I'm ready for Mattel to sell me the coolest incarnations of the entire DCU... and this is from someone who has sworn off Mattel products because of the way they market and how hard it can be to find.

Are you listening Mattel? You've piqued my interest! I want to give you my money again!

Umpire writes: Captain Collector and Toygodd both called this early in the year. Time seems to be running out on the DCD clock. High prices, less articulation and a niche marketing system will hurt this line. DCSH with high quality sculpts, modeate prices and nationwide distribution will make people forget DCD...

    THE DEATH OF SPIDERMAN 5"??? - 8/11/07
    Name:BIGBOY

    The Death Of Spider-Man Figures?
This week Hasbro have announced disappointing sales regarding thier "Spider-man 3" 5" action figure movie range.

**:Hey this is no surpise to collectors who know that 6" figures are the only way to go - remember the truly bad "Batman Begins" and "Superman Returns" figs?

So Hasbro has come back with a new 6" Spider-Man line, inculding a legends stlye Build-a-figure of "Sandman"

I saw these a week or so ago and think 6" or not they still stink!
There just wasn't anything new, there was even some previously released Toy Biz sculpts. LAZY!

This has got me wondering - Is the Spider-Man franchise dead!!???

Could anything shock some life back into it?

    Any ideas?

    Name:???man

**I really couldn't agree more. I saw these new 6" ers in person, and aside from the cool Black Spiderman, they were very uninspired. The Kirsten Dunst was particularly bad. The Build-a-figure, errr build -a-statue Sandman was lame, and could've been really cool. This was in stark contrast to the hyper-cool FF legends line, which I thought blew away their 6" Spidey offerings.

    Name:BigBoy

Yeah, those FF figs look great!

**Thank the lord Hasbro has seen sense on the 6" scale!

I just can't think of many more Spidey characters I'd like to see?

There's a 70's "White Tiger" I'd like and also "Tarantula".

Should Hasbro merge Spider-man into Marvel Legends and have done with it?

    BIGBOY'S BACK IN TOWN!!!!

**Hey Umpire, ???man something tells me that you guy's might be taking all this a little too seriously!!??

Man are you guy's wound up tight or what?

I stick by my first posting, I feel that this new style of 'Overheard' is poor. The original was far far better.

I felt it was much easier to view all the post and it often introduced me to toy lines I had never taken a interest in. It's only fault was it wasn't updated quick enough. This was something which other readers had also commented on.

As far as the AFT site is concerned, I think it's great!

My favorite section is Captain Collector, which often has new action figure photo's and reviews way before other sites!

My criticism was directed at solely the change in the 'Overheard" blog and it's management, not with any other part of the AFT site; of which I completely agree a lot of hard work is put in.

My posts title "This Blog Sucks" was written to try to get some life back into 'Overheard' which as I'm sure you have notice has completely died. It was meant to "spark up" some debate, not send you guys into a nervous breakdown!

I'm shocked at ???man's post - Has he completely lost it!!???

He was so bitter and twisted, what was all that "calling my wife a whore" stuff about??
That was so unprofessional and childish!

What upset you guys so much? Were you worried what I said was true?

Get a sense of humor guy's. Just cause some jerk criticises you it's no big deal.

    ** Big Boy...
If you read my post then you would see that it's not silencing anyone. (See Big Boy Rants in Overheard) Your first post made it seem that AFT was shutting you down. The front page of AFT still carries the Overheard section as it was. This blogging feature gives you the reader the first crack at putting down your thougths on the hobby for yourself. You don't have to wait for me to post. But we keep the feature up because some folks want to reamain annonymous.

But how is this silencing the AFT readers?

Overheard is not MY section. I edit it. You readers are the ones who are contributing content. I don't make stuff up. For Overheard to run, you need to be involved. Not just bellyaching. Where's my update??? I could ask - Where are my readers opinions???

I don't squelch opinions, or even badmouthing AFT. I enjoy lively discourse on Overheard. Short of obscene or hate speech I won't change a word of your posts. ( I will correct spelling sometimes to make it clearer to readers, but I won't meddle with your ideas.)

I get what you were trying to do, and I did respond in a level headed manner. I didn't fly off any handles...

You have to know that we are just trying as hard as we can to get you news, reviews, photos, videos and podcasts of the toy lines you want to hear about. Our Webmaster is killing himself to make AFT more accessible and interesting as possible. Toygodd and Prize Monkey are literally tossing hundreds of toys to our fans each year.
We would just like to see more activity, more replies to our posts. Let us know what you like, and what you don't. So, make the case... I'm all ears...

BTW: This thread belongs in the Overheard section!

Umpire, I think you should be asking "Where are my readers opinions???"

I love "Overheard" is it give's us the collectors a chance to tell the toy companies what we love and hate.

This must have worked as Hasbro as abandoned thier sad 5" Spider-man and Fantasic Four range!

**So much for what the Umpire had to say regarding freedom of speech!

It's a shame that you guys at AFT act like a "cheerleader who got dumped on prom night" when they get any bad feedback.

Go on Umpire run and cry to your mommy! Tell her that BIG BOY said mean things!

Hey all the readers are just thinking what I said, thats why so few people bother to post stuff.

    Umpire writes:

    That was a mistake,
I really wanted to post the discussion onto the front page. I believe your post was entitled: This blog site sucks! You are welcome to repost it. But in essence you were saying that we are too lazy to update Overheard and that the voices of the people (readers) have been silenced.

I have a hard time taking this seriously. Now you can post when and as often as you like, but you are silenced? Strange. That the post was taken down was a mistake, but it was not my doing. It helped introduce a subject that I think needs to be addressed.

In my response to you I pointed out that we here at AFT are collectors like most of you reading this. We collect toys, and enjoy talking about toys and reviewing them. The only difference between the readers and the writers on AFT is that we have a forum, a platform from which to speak our minds and have hundreds of people hear us. And yes, we get our share of criticisms. That's the price of speaking your mind... Someone will always come around and give you a shot. It's easy to sit back at home, behind the keyboard of your computer and slash away at what someone else has built, but do you ever go out and try to make something on your own? Do you travel, photograph, report and interview PR and manufacturing people? And we get to do this on our own dime!

We get free stuff and we run contests constantly. Toygodd has given away thousands of dollars worth of collectibles away on his own. I have purchased many figures and toys on my own to give our readers something cool to own. What other site gives away as much?

It's easy to bash, it's easy to criticise... Try producing something. Try adding something to the discussion. We want you guys to interact. Talk to us, not just sit there and be force-fed what someone wants to give you. Make this site yours. We have one of the greatest communities I have ever seen.

So, come on Big Boy do you have more in you than negative comments? Or is that all you have?

    I'll talk with you anytime...

Two Villains in Superman: Man of Steel - 8/06/07
Two Villains in Superman: Man of Steel
Source: The Planet August 4, 2007

A user on BlueTights' The Planet Forum got a chance to meet Superman: Man of Steel co-writer Michael Dougherty at the U.S. Capitol and asked him about the sequel:

I asked him if he was a part of the sequel because everything I have seen says [Bryan] Singer and [Dan] Harris are writing the script and that he isn't mentioned. He confirmed that he is writing it with the two just like the last picture. I then expressed to him that I was hoping the delays of Superman: The Man of Steel weren't true. He said that they were on track and that the goal is still to have the movie out in the Summer of 2009. He seemed a little hesitant about it but did his best to try and reassure that it will get done by then. I asked if he could give any more info on the film. He responded, "There are TWO villains," and he smiled.

Brandon Routh is returning in the title role for the Warner Bros. release.

GI JOE ... WHERE ARE YOU? - 7/23/07
    By: FLORIDA COLLECTOR

GI JOE ... WHERE ARE YOU?

** I just today got to talk to a hasbro rep at walmart here in central florida and guess what these idiots have decided to do with the new GI JOE 25th anniversary figure waves. They are not putting them out until they re-set thier toy isles for the christmas season in late august and early september. And then.....wait for it.... only walmart 'A' stores are getting thse figures because.....wait for it again..... walmart has too many stores and hasbro is not putting enough cases of figures out to cover even 1/2 of thier stores. This comes from the mouth of the Hasbro rep I talked to in a walmart here in central florida. once again walmart drops the ball on understanding toy collectors and the fact that certain items are part of the collectors niche here in the usa.
AND NOE FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT....
I asked the hasbro toy rep there in the walmart about why do all the walmarts not have any current star wars, titanium, star wars comic packs, marvel legends, and star wars galactic heroes and her answer was...."they do not tell us anything about upcoming waves of toys, and Walmart has their own distibution" so I asked her....so you are here doing what then and she said...."if you want information on action figures you need to ask the store manager"......what an idiot. Like I said, to be a toy rep for hasbro all you need is a pulse.
    BY THE WAY....
Did you know that hasbro has included in the next 2 waves of star wars saga legends figures that there is a red, a green, a blue, and a yellow clone officer...basically a re-painted clone trooper released 4 times with a different color paint stripe on the shoulder. Can you say PEG WARMING CRAP!!?
Why dont they just release a clone trooper 10 pack with all white clone troopers and diagrams on how to paint the 1000 different variations of clone troopers paint jobs.....I wonder what a maintenance clone trooper will look like? OH.....i got one for you hasbro.....how about a lavender clone trooper and you can call him the 6th fleet towel boy clone trooper.

    subject: CUT HASBRO SOME SLACK!
Hey, you shouldn't give Hasbro a bad rap for Walmart's screw ups! As far as the clone troopers go, none of the officers have been released in fully articculated form except for the green one in the saga series and the red one way back in the AOTC line. Otherwise they only came in the clone wars three packs ( which had barely any articculation), or in some exclusive set. So I'm sure there are people who would still be happy to get these. I'll agree the rep's info sucked, but that could have been one cranky rep. Don't blame all of Hasbro for a rep with a chip on their shoulder and a chain of stores who don't know what the heck their doing. All I'm saying is give Hasbro a break.

** Hey Matches sorry to hear that you are out of the collecting scene. If you are and have any transformers for sale, I'm interested. Hit me up. (Randy if this is ok)

Awww.....the toy market is dying? Are you a doctor?

** You know I read matches post and can't help but think what a negative, outlook it is. First off i look up at my display of many superheroes and realise this is one of the best times ever to be a collector. hell, i got 3-4 diff outfits of Lex Luthor, how cool. i have figures of people i never thought i'd get....Heck a Stan Lee figure??? This is the stuff of dreams. so the JLU line frustrates you??? I'm sorry, nobodys making you buy them. Yeah it sucks excecs get perks, I get free coffe at work. Bet they have to pay for coffee at Hasbro or Mattel or whatever. My point is, i'm doing this, collecting, for fun. As i belive most really do......So if it is pissing you off that much, quit and pursue that dream of dating a Hooters waitress. I don't know about you but I'd prolly rather have that than an army of 3 inch plastic men......but diff strokes and all that.

i really don't see how your frustration is making the market die. Honestly its never been bigger, which too does cause some problems. and the toy companys aren't really out to get you. Maybe you could drop them an email or something. sure the market may die someday, but as long as people like you and me keep buying, complaining or not.......theres a market. and don't forget there are actually some children out there that buy em too. imagine that, kids buying toys.....i wonder if they complain as much as you?

Good luck, maybe you should tell your hooters waitress about your joker dilemma, that would really win her over.

    FIGURE COLLECTING BLUES

** For all you collectorx out there who always never seem to find the figures you want....dont blame other collectors or toy scalpers or ebay sellers....it has nothing to do with them. Heres the reason. There are simply too many retail spaces and too little product. Last month alone Target opened 51 new super centers and walmart 49 all across the country. Target has plans for 200 staores in the usa alone over the next 6 years as walmart will have 5000. Throw in all the kaybee toys and the few TRU's and K-Marts too and there just is not enough product, or cases to cover all the stores. Items are already being shipped to the busier stores, walmart calls them thier 'A' stores, those stores that do like some 300K per day or more. This already is in play and has been for some time. I recently went to a Walmart supercenter grand opening....i was the first person in the toy isle and what did they have.....no star wars, no marvel legends, no justice league, no spawn, no titanium.....the aisle was literally empty. I am not kidding, they opened with no action figures or even hot wheels or even legos. For months and months now here in central florida, both Target and Walmart both get about 1 case of star wars or marvel legends in store about every 16 days or so, thats it, no more than that has shown up in almost a year now. To this day i can think of at least 6 walmarts here that have yet to even see the new 30th anniversary figures. I had a clerk tell me that they got in the new darth vader figures the other day only to find out that she was talking about the vader with coin album set, which by the way at the walmart closest to this one had them clearanced for $5.00 less than 6 miles away. So....the next time you blame other collectors or the so called toy scalpers or ebayers ot there for your woes.....remember....its hasbro and the big chains not being able to keep up with demand and not being able to see thier deficiency in re-stocking empty pegs.!
Wlamart has a saying....an empty peg costs the chain $5.00 per day
in sales, so you would think they would lite a fire under someone somewhere at hasbro or thier many distribution warehouse to wake up and see the problem. Just imagine....this is just one or two things from one department of a few stores....just think how many other pegs are empty all the time around the store. Out of curiosity i checked.....yes i walked the entire store, not the grocery side or clothes but all the other departments and i counted 94 empty pegs in one store, 26 or which were in the toy department. Well now you all know....so just imagine this time next year when target and walmart have opened each 50 stores per month for another year. You think finding those specific items is hard now.....by then you will be thanking the force for ebay.

I'm with you, Matches Malone, I recently decided to stop collecting as well

** I agree with everything you write about in your thoughtful essay. The state of toy collecting is horrible. For me, I began to become jaded when the quality of Star Wars figures severely declined while the price increased. The plastic used seems to be as pliable as a piece of chewing gum; and don t even get me started on the accessories, which are visibly bent in the packaging. Seven bucks for a Star Wars figure? No thanks. Ten bucks for the special Star Wars figures, which is how all the $7 ones should be? No thanks. Constantly repainting the same figures over and over again? No thanks. I keep thinking of that Simpsons line about the Malibu Stacy doll, But she has a new hat! The JLU figures have the right idea, $5 for a better quality figure, if you can find the damn things! My Toys R Us here in Rhode Island has literally about 30 Superman figures in the old packaging and not a single purple-carded figure. What about that Vigilante set that came out for like a day? Perhaps I am getting too old for this stuff. I m sick of wasting time and gas to consistently find that there s no new product. Even figures I don t collect look awful! Anyone out there collecting Pirates of the Caribbean figures? Didn t think so. How about the 10 thousandth McFarlane offering? Yeah, me neither. Those new Fantastic Four 2 figures look great don t they? Just kidding. Man, I miss the Super Powers days. I m done.

    Name:SuperDadd DCSH Commotion!

**Hmmm. I find it interesting that there is a rise of hoopla over Mattel's latest acquisition of DC properties, beyond the Superman & Batman characters, and supporting cast that somehow cast a shadow of aspersion, doubt, and a prognostication of doom (or at the very least a decline) for the continuance of Hasbro's Marvel Legends line.

Aren't we being a little hard on the heroes of Hasbro? Yeah, they had a rough start out of the gate with their Emma Frost, and some of the other figures. The articulation, paint washes etc. But, for a mass-market distributor, they weren't as bad as they could have been. It seems that in many respects Hasbro continued to pay attention to important details like scale. Let's face it; Hasbro could have put all their figs. at six inches exactly. But we still got a decent sized Hulk, Thor, Iron Man, and She-Hulk, etc. from Hasbro. The HML figs. seem to be a studier lot, and we still got BAFs smaller yes, but even the much-anticipated LCBH line (made by Marvel Toys, you know, formerly "Toy Biz") is only offering 10 inch BAFs. Hey, I ain't mad at'em. I'm hip to the rising gas prices and how it impacts the "Toy-biz" (pun intended). Mattel's first offering of the DCSH line married beautiful sculpts with very good articulation (but not as much as HML currently offers). From!
all accounts, everything that went right with the DCSH line was because of the Four Horsemen's love of the characters. Mattel did not give us any pack-ins, or extras, like a BAF Doomsday, or even a slightly larger Doomsday, or a sculpted stand for the same money we do get those extras with HML.

And while we're on the subject of scale Mattel released both their Batman and Superman movie figures at a 5 inch scale, and no one said much of anything! The only reason Hasbro caught guff for the 5 inch Spidey 3 figs. was because they were already continuing the ML line, which, if you remember, had already given us previous versions of those characters at 6 inches. Like I've said before, the collective collection of collectors' complaints do us action figure aficionados much good, but cha' gotta' be equal opportunity whiners.

On that note, nobody's happier that we're gonna' get an expanded DCSH line and by the FH, no less. And, I have it on good account, that Mattel's going to lean heavily on the FH's opinion (Mattel please lean a lot on their opinion). But, y'all gotta' start cuttin' my "Hasbros" some slack. The HML wave 4 looks a lot better'n their previous offerings (the previews do anyway).

Some have written that they're "out" because they don't like the way HML has peddled their wares. Well, then "Bye". Stop threatening to commit suicide, before you accidentally kill yourself.

With the promise of new DCSH, LCBH, and HML waves, the future of action figures look to kick some major @$$ (I m gonna hafta' find a second paying gig). I don't want any of my cutting edge toy makers throwing in the towel. Hang in their Hasbro, do it to it Mattel. If I'm willing to continue buying double sets of your stuff, you otta' at least keep pumping them out! My sons and I are counting on you!

    BUYOW!

    : I agree

Is the sun setting on the toy collecting hobby? - 6/21/07
    Name:Matches Malone

: Wow, I never thought I'd say this but I think I'm out...

** I've realized that suddenly my personal apathy about the state of action figure collecting rivals that of the major toy manufacturers. Going to a toy store and finding what you want has become the exception and not the rule. Scalpers thrive on ebay. The great articulated fully painted six inch figure is now making way for the Happy Mealesque 5 inch figure sold for the same price (FF2 and Spider-Man3). The once revolutionary Marvel Legends line has had it's marrow sucked out with bad paint jobs, worse sculpts and less articulation. This line should be blazing trails for other lines to follow but instead has lumped itself squarely in the mediocre category. So I'm out. I haven't been enthused about any in an action figure isle for a while and I am pretty easy to win over. It seems like I stopped caring the same day the companies did. Maybe I'll pick up the G.I.Joe anniversary figures but if smells like a hassle I won't bother. I am now firmly of the opinion !
that "My money ought to be enough." Not my time, sleep, gas, sanity...just my money. If the toy manufacturers don't feel that's enough...fine...next sucker. I can now devote a larger portion of my income to filling in a few holes in my Toybiz Marvel Legends collection (or "The Quality Years" as I've come to think of them) and call it a day. Goodbye Star Wars and all the impossibility of keeping up with their bizarre waves. Goodbye Transformers which never really delivered on the promise that Takara Convoy Prime made (an entire line in that scale with all the major 80's characters). Goodbye DC Superheroes, sorry that licensing issues made you into the little line that almost was...if you'd have made them I'd have bought them. Goodbye DC Direct, minimal articulation, brittle plastic and five bucks more than most figures for an in-house license...good riddance. Goodbye Hasbro Marvel toys, you were the straw, you drove a juggernaut of a license into the ground by setting!
action figures back decades...literally (look at Toybiz Stuf!
    f from t
he 90s and the Fantastic Four 2 stuff on the shelves today). Goodbye JLU nearly a hundred figures in and not an in scale Joker in sight? A Hal Jordan for WB execs only? Basically I'm saying the baggage I have to deal with as a collector is equal the baggage I would have to deal with dating a Hooters Waitress...only that would probably cost less. The toy companies are in for a rude awakening if other collectors begin to see what I see happening and start thinking as I did one simple sentence: I don't have to collect them all.

but the 30th anniversary Star Wars figs are really great! Yeah I can do without the coins and I'm not talking about your 1000th remake of a Stormtrooper with different colors on him, or Han, Luke, Vader or Leia. I'm talking about the more obscure figures, Lava Miner, Galactic Marine, Hermi Odle, Darth Malak, Darth Revan, and Roron Corobb. Plus those mcQuarrie figures are something else. Nice to throw in concept prototypes of well know characters in different settings. Marvel Legends, thats another whole story there which I won't get into!

Anyone looking forward to the debut of Silver Scream's new line of obscure horror toys might have a longer while to wait. Dread Central has contacted ex SOTA Jerry M. who has been named publicly as a contributing sculptor and he claims to have no current dealings with this company. Also Silver Scream has advertised making an appearance at SDCC, and unfortunately there are no reservations made at this already sold out event. And the final nail in this toy line's coffin appears to be the fact that Taurus entertainment, which holds the license to Day of the Dead characters, has made no plans to license toys with Silver Scream. Hopefully this ends up just a lot of loose ends and these cult figures can one day take their rightful place on your shelves next to Jason, Leatherface, and freddy.

    WALMART HAS A PROBLEM

** I cant believe it!!! there are super walmart centers in my area that have never recieved shipments of the coined star wars 30th anniversary figures, marvel legends wave 2, star wars comic packs wave 2, any new galactic heroes or titanium waves too. What is going on with these stores, or better yet, this chain. you go in and there are stacks of spiderman, pirates of the carribbean, and transformers and then there in the middle of the isle is this gap with empty pegs for star wars figures, galactic heroes, titanium vehicles, star wars comic packs, and of course marvel legends. Its like they have no clue. this is something that can be found in over 30 walmarts in and around the central florida area.....its not just at one or two stores, but seems to be the norm as i have contacted friends in charlotte and also in south carolina who say thier stores are exactly the same....so whos to blame. hasbro or walmart and their supposededly super computerized re-ordering system. !
I ask a clerk to scan the peg with an inventory gun....this by the way will tell if they are on the way and how many.....there were none on the pegs and the system showed over 200 star wars figures in stock in the store....there is none in the store. If this is typical of thier inventory than walmart is headed for a disaster. If just one item in one department of one store in one state is this screwed up just imagine how completely off thier total inventory as a chain must actually be. It has to be in the billions of dollars of merchandise. I sure hope someone at walmart reads this because according to what employees tell me....walmart computers re-order automatically when a stock level reaches a certain number....well...since they are not getting anything in new ever, it would seem that thier inventory on these items is showing similar numbers in stock at each store when in all actuality there is none....so, the computer does not order more. also the employees see this and !
just dont care and also have no means to let anyone know that!
    they ar
e not getting restock in thier departments....so we as collectors never see new items arrive. THANK GOD FOR TARGET!!!!!

    **Hey Sideshow!

Another couple of years for us to see armored figures? Uh, what are you waiting for? Man, I know it's hard to compte with Medicom's figures that you also sell, but making us wait to get decent figures at a working man's wage? I'm PO'ed to say the least. LOTR, and SW deserve to get their paws on some cooler figures.... Kit Fisto? Uh, no! What about a stormtrooper or Darth Vader? Even Luke and Han in Episode IV costumes would be nice! Get the lead out Sideshow...

I rremember when Overheard used to be alive and full of whining babies that couldn't find some variant or some such thing. What happened did all the collectors just grow up and discover women? What ever happened to the Desert Monk? He used to push a lot of folk's buttons, and it was fun to read.
I'll start some crap: Mc Faralne toys rule and Marvel Legends is for losers... I can't cuss, I want them to post this.

Now get to whining ya babies!

IS TOYS R US CRAZY OR STUPID?

** I just today went into my local toys r us and there sat 20 of thier new exclusive battle packs tuskin raiders with bantha. I thought, its about time. I got to the register and it rang up at $44.99!! This is the straw that broke my camels back with this idiotic company. There is no way anyone is going to pY $44.99 for 3 peg warming figures (tuskin raidrs....are you kidding me? put them on cards and they have to mark them down to $2.00 at wal-mart just get them out of the clearance isle. A bantha that looks like someone took all the dust bunnies from under thier bed and glued them to the old power of the force beast pack bantha creature.....toys r us is just dumb. This company just recently went from a publicly traded company to a privately owned company which everyone knows is the first step in going out of business. This company then closed 2/3 of thier existing stores or changed them to babies r us to try to stay alive. What is the thinking with these idiots when a!
ll the other battle packs at all the other retail locations, including exclusives are $19.99? This to me, and should to all who read this, shows that toys r us is on life support as a company and will not be here much longer. This kind of idioacy and pricing tactics....as seen over the last few years, you know what i mean, all items have to be one or two and even three dollars more per item than all other retail locations, just shows me they are struggling to understand an industry and are not interested in competeing with walmart and target who will soon be thier downfall. They may sell baby supplies and infant furniture and the such but thier toy days are limited and today they lost the business of me forever. I dont care if they give away the next exclusive, i am not stepping foot in any of thier stores ever again. As a matter of fact i will throw a block party when they finally announce they are closing up forever. I am sick of the crappy service, the complete lack of an!
y product knowledge, the incessant attitude that collectors a!
    re more
trouble than anything, and also that all the cases of toys in the back were ordered and on hold for jesus christ himself and no one is allowed to get them. Maybe if they had gotten them more they would not be in the situation they are in now..almost dead as a retial chain. I would ask all collectors to ban toys r us and thier current exclusive and to also call thier stores and complain about the prices. Call them and ask for the DM phone numbers for your local area and complain to him/her as well. Just in my area there are plans for 4 more super targets (2 being built as i write this) and 6 more super wal mart centers within a 40 mile area here near Orlando and the space coast. If toys r us dissapears alltogether i will not miss them as most of the collectors out there will agree. Who needs them.....For all you collectors out there.....kaybee, kaybee outlets, and kaybee liquidators carry the same current toys and toy lines as toys r us right now at half the price anyway.

Umpire writes: One hundred dollars for an AT-AT? $25.00 for the basic figures? TRU has a lot of things to straighten up. Target is getting the vehicles out for five bucks less, and getting the new figures out a bit faster. Has anyone found ML2 at TRU retail??? Nope, but there are still Toybiz figures clogging the shelves. With the high cost of gasoline I'm ready to start buying case lots from online retialers like Entertainment Earth.

** HASBRO? who's distribution is it anyway?

WOULD SOMEONE TELL HASBRO THE FOLLOWING:
1- NEVER NEVER NEVER MAKE AGAIN FOR ANY REASON:
    OBI-WAN, VADER, MACE, EMPEROR, C-3PO, R2 D2,
    LANDO CALRISSIAN, BATTLEDROID, SUPER BATTLEDROID,
TUSKIN RAIDER, ETC...ETC(feel free to continue)
PEG WARMER:(definition) A figure made, usually by hasbro that will fill pegs
in retail outlets confusing thier managers and
computer systems as to actual sellable items in
stock or on hand therefore keeping the system
from re-ordering what really needs to be on the
    pegs.
2- TELL TARGET THAT IF THEY ACTUALLY WILL PUT OUT MORE THAN ONE CASE OF
FIGURES IN A 10 DAY PERIOD THAT THIER OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE NEAT FREAK
STORE SHELVES WILL NOT FALL OVER AND EXPLODE!! SOMEONE GET THESE PEOPLE
    A ZOLOF.
3- THE ONLY REASON YOU SELL STAR WARS IS THAT IT IS A COLLECTORS MARKET AND
THAT YOU NEED TO REALIZE THAT ONE NEW FIGURE PER CASE MIXED IN WITH 11
PEG WARMING FIGURES DOES NOTHING BUT STIFFLE THE FLOW OF NEW PRODUCT TO
STORES LIKE WALMART AND TARGET AS THEY ONLY RE ORDER WHEN THEY GET TO A LOW
    STOCK LEVEL.
4- A QUESTION FOR HASBRO: WHY IS EVERY STORE IN THE COUNTRY PILED TO THE
CIELING WITH SPIDERMAN AND THE STAR WARS AND MARVEL
LEGENDS PEGS ARE ALWAYS AND CONSISTANTLY EMPTY?
HOW DUMB IS YOUR COMPANY? DOES YOUR HASBRO REPS
WHO WALK AROUND LIKE ZOMBIES IN THE STORES NOT SEE
    THIS?
5- HASBRO!!!! SOME PRODUCT KNOWLEDGE MIGHT BE A PRE REQUISIT TO HIRING HASBRO
TOY REPS. i ACTUALLY HAD A REP AT A TOYS R US TELL ME IN NOVEMBER OF 2006
THAT THE STAR WARS LINE WAS ENDING IN DECEMBER RIGHT AFTER CHRISTMAS.
6- HOW ABOUT A MARVEL LEGENDS SIZE STAR WARS FIGURE LINE? YOU OWE US FOR
SCREWING UP THE 12" LINE THE WAY I SEE IT.
7- QUIT RE-PAINTING CLONE TROOPERS FOR GOD'S SAKES.
8- LAST BUT NOT LEAST....FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DO NOT EVER EVER EVER MAKE A
    WOLVERINE FIGURE AGAIN.
(if you read this and agree with anything pleae respond and tell hasbro through this or any other website what you think. maybe these morons will listen.)
