![]() ON TO THE QUESTIONS....
|
Now this is only part 1 of my Retro-Superheroes Wave 2 review and I will make more of my general comments about the line itself in part 2 but I am grateful that they even tried to do it. I give them props for that. As I said more on this later.
There are 4 figures in the wave 2. Aquaman, Black Manta, Two-Face, and that man among supermen… The Batman.

Mattel stuck with the retro style packing including the "premade discoloration". Each package has the headshots of the four characters on the front. On the back are some pretty cool action shots. The Batman and Aquaman are classic art that takes us back to thrilling days of yesteryear (as the saying goes).

One thing I actually thought was very cool was the little classic style Matty ( I assume). I think this was an excellent touch.

This time out, I will be reviewing Batman and Two Face.
Two Face is one of the villains that never actually appeared in the original Mego line which makes him all the cooler to have and a must to buy.

The Two Face side is classic comic styling and very well done. The Harvey side really reminds me of a sculpt I have seen somewhere before but I just can't place it. If you can identify, drop me a line.

One missed opportunity I was kind of surprised at, was that both hands were clean rather than having one scarred. Would have been cool to have one the same pea green as his face.

His clothes are removable but I didn't because it seemed like it would be too much of a hassle to put them back on. The jacket has some clear clasps so that Harvey can button up on the cold Gotham nights. I was also surprised that he had no belt.

I really like the blue shirt material on the Two Face side. I actually thought it would make a great Superman outfit rather the light blue one they used in Wave 1.

His shoes are different than we have seen so far. One black and one brown. These make the 4th type of footwear used in the line. 3 types of boots and now these.

I am considering buying a shirt like this. Would make it easier when debating myself over what to write about next.
DC!!!

Marvel!!

And now ….. The Batman
It was obvious that this was based on Adam West and the 60's TV Show.
Even in the package you could see his belly lopping over his belt. You know if Adam had used the pole less and the stairs more, he would not have had this problem.

This is actually a pretty neat figure for a blue Batman.

From the side he looks like Michael Keaton with a solid cowl bending back trying to look up.

He is significantly different from the original Mego Batman. (Sorry it is not a direct apples to apples comparison but My Original removable cowl Batman is in a box) First it seems Bruce nowadays is into french bikini cut underwear rather than regular briefs. Not to mention the darker grey tights.

Without the capes you can see the obvious mass difference between to the two. Retro Batman looks nearly anorexic to Mego Batman. But the weight Retro Batman lost in his waist, went straight to his quads. I guess all those stairs down to the cave REALLY develop your legs.

Next you can see, some minor differences in the Utility belt. The Mego has more pointy capsules. The Mego has more of a plastic belt, where Retro Batman has more of a vinyl belt.

Seeing the cape from the back shows the size in comparison to the figure. You can also see how much larger the Retro cape is than the Mego. I really appreciate this because Batman should have a huge cape.

The boots of Retro Batman are much darker and thicker but are near the exact same style.

The gauntlets are mostly nice. I like them better than the plastic gloves of old, that you can see in other pictures. They are a bit big and I think they should have used blue double sided fabric rather than white is the middle which is easily visible and looks a bit tacky. I show these to you upside down so that you can see they did take great pains to give them a sculpted look. From behind you can also get an idea of exactly how big these things are.

Now let's talk about the most important part of this figure… the cowl.
I really like the cowl; to me it is very reminiscent of the 1966 ideal batman cowl. I appreciate the nostalgia and knowledge that Mattel showed in its creation. Unlike the Mego cowl which had the eyes holes cut out so we could see Bruce's eyes. The Retro cowl has the eyes filled in and whited out. I like this a lot but I also miss the other.

The way you take off the cowl is a slit in the rear that can be opened up to pull the head. Since I don't have my original handy, I can't say for sure but I think this is a much better way than the first.

Once you get the cowl off, you are greeted with stylish if not a bit bloated Bruce head. In all seriousness I do like it. Of course Bruce will really need Hair Club For Men with that receding hairline.

I had considered taking off Two Face's suit and putting it on him, but it would have been too much trouble.

Now for the not so good stuff. I will have to exchange my Batman figure. My cowl had a scuff on the side, that I saw when he was in the package but thought it was something that could be cleaned off. It can't.

The next thing was the Bat emblem. I really like that it was not just a sticker. But as I posed and played him for this article. His Bat began to come off. Now this was something else I saw in the package but I thought it was the fabric. I don't think this is a running problem but watch out for it when you buy.

The way Superman said it happened.

The way it actually happened!

The way it would have happened if Grant Morrison had written it for Batman INC.

In part 2, we will look at Aquaman and Black Manta. We will also look at Mego style figures through the years, differences and Pro's and Con's of the all.
Here is a sneak peak

8/25/10 DC DIRECT NEWS: YOU'LL EXPECT HIM TO ASK "DO YOU WANT TO KNOW HOW I GOT THESE SCARS?"
Batman: The Dark Knight The Joker Bust
:
* Pick a card… any card.
* A heart-stopping likeness of the Joker!
* He dares you to ignore him.
Pick a card… any card. Uh-oh. You chose the Joker! Wearing his daunting in-your-face face, this malevolent Joker dares you to ignore him. The stunning bust-- sculpted by Kolby Juke-- features a heart-stopping likeness of the antihero at his worst. Measuring about 4 3/4-inches tall x 3-inches wide x 2 1/2-inches long, this hand-painted, cold-cast porcelain work is limited to 6,000 pieces. So, now's the time to pick one up for yourself or your favorite Joker admirer. It's in the cards, and tomorrow may be too late!
The Joker Bust: Special Summer Savings
Let's start with the box. Now my box is a little crumpled, but you can still get the idea of the work the guys put into these. You can see on the front in the right hand corner a red imitation wax stamp declaring it an SDCC exclusive.

The art wraps around the corners with each character having their name prominently displayed.

The back has full frontal shots of both guys.

When you open it up, the Joker's hat is nestled in between the two. Batman's cape is normally tucked behind him but I had taken him out already. Batman's batarang is underneath the hat.

I really didn't even know the batarang was included but I am glad it was. It is a very nice touch. And huge.

Batman is very cool. I have never been much for the blue toned Batman but this one is nice. I am looking forward to the black version of him.

It has a very cool paint job, but I think there are too many muscles.
Look at that back, I mean does even the Hulk look like that?

The cape is nice and cloth and large enough to give it some pleats.

I was very surprised that their heads moved, a lot! I expected the arms and legs to move (though they are tight) but the head doesn't just turn, it has massive up and down movement.
The batarang fits nicely into his hand, but you can't raise it too high as it won't go past his head.

As for the Joker, I think he looks aged and constipated in the face, but he does have Luther's from “The New Guy” crazy eye down pat. I mean this boarders on a Jonah Hex Joker. I am cracking on him but I do like him.

He looks even better with his hat on. I think it was a very cool inclusion. I do hope with the upcoming version that he comes with a machine gun. I like the detail. The fact they added character lines to his neck is impressive, they also made a very good attempt at doing a trench coat while leaving enough room for spats.

Mez-itz also added their symbol to their feet.

This is Joker after he has been watching too many Michael Jackson videos.

This Morrison's pimp Batman.

Holy Moley Batman, Bat-Mite's been in Bane's venom and he's ticked.

On three old chum!

After all is said and done, you should really consider purchasing these, even if you're still not sure about the style. I'm glad I have mine.
I am definitely in for the upcoming Superman and Darkseid, Green Lantern and Sinestro, and the aforementioned repaint of Batman and Joker. I am looking forward to them.
I have included a link below to save you time Googleing. If you do buy, I would love to hear what you think.

Batman vs. the Joker, Vinyl Style
Wow it’s getting to be an active week huh? Hey this is a long post so, if you have not seen the other stuff I have posted this week, like the Marvel Select Thing Review, or the cool toy museum video, please make sure you scroll past this post and check out what has been going on this week.
I know most of the time we just post the pictures and description for these solicitations but I want to at least try to do something a bit different.
I am going to post their offerings exactly (well pretty much) as they appear from there site, but I am going to give you my thoughts on them as well. Kind of a They say, I say shtick.
The previews that will contain these along with the order form to make these yours will be in comic shops August 25th, 2010. I will try to post an update as to when is the last day to order.
You will want to know that because there is some pretty cool stuff.
When they come out, I will be doing a review on as much as I can and tell you whether you should kick yourself for not ordering or sigh in relief at the cash you saved.
First off the Figures:
THEY SAY:

From BLACKEST NIGHT to BRIGHTEST DAY!
They're back for a reason.
Comics' biggest event continues as BRIGHTEST DAY burns away the BLACKEST NIGHT! In this best-selling follow-up, the white light has resurrected twelve heroes and villains. Though the exact reasons for their rebirths remain a mystery, each is destined to play an intricate role in the future of the DC Universe.
Written by award-winning writers Geoff Johns and Peter J. Tomasi, BRIGHTEST DAY sets the stage for the next exciting era of the DC Universe.
The Firestorm figure stands at 6.75", features multiple points of articulation and includes a display base.
The Hawkman figure stands at 6.75", features multiple points of articulation and includes a display base.
The Martian Manhunter figure stands at 6.75", features multiple points of articulation and includes a display base.
The Mera figure stands at 6.5", features multiple points of articulation and includes a display base
Character-appropriate accessories are also included.
4-color clamshell blister card packaging.
I SAY:
BUY BUY BUY!!!! If you don’t have the money then SELL SELL SELL then BUY BUY BUY!! These are very cool.
Firestorm:. I like the flame hair. He looks like he maybe short on articulation. I liked him better as a black lantern. Those atomic swirls for his fist would be a tried and true accessory
Hawkman: Just look at the Mask on Carter and that detail. The only thing that I am iffy about is the symbol on his chest. Looks a little faint to me. He should come with a cool mace, but we will see.
Martian Manhunter: I like this figure far better than the last one they did. I think the head is a little weird, but it may be the angle. The cape and the bandolier look cool. I really think that his uniform should have red boots, not cape colored boots. I hope the accessories are Oreo’s.
Mera: I am glad to see that she is shorter than the men because she is not an Amazon(I was unaware that all of the men in the DC universe are the exact same height. This may be a side effect of coming back to life but I think Jonn should have had some size on the rest). I like the flowing hair and bodysuit scaling. However the accessory should have been a hard water trident or some other construct and not her husband’s poker.
All in all I like these and can’t wait till the make them into white lanterns.
THEY SAY:
COVER GIRLS OF THE DC UNIVERSE: WONDER WOMAN (ARMORED) Statue
DESIGNED BY ADAM HUGHES • SCULPTED BY JACK MATHEWS

An armored eagle, Wonder Woman shouts a warrior's battle cry. Golden wings for flight, with golden chest-plate, war-skirt and eagle's head helmet designed to reflect the rays of the sun, blinding foes in their light. Carrying a Hephaestus-forged sword sharp enough to slice, the Amazon Princess epitomizes fierce in the midst of fight.
Inspired by the cover to WONDER WOMAN #173, this statue is hand-painted, cold-cast porcelain, measures approximately 10" high x 8.5" wide x 5" deep, and is packaged in a 4-color box.
$ 99.99 US On Sale April 13, 2011
I SAY:
I really like this concept of the character. I am glad it is getting some play but I hope they don’t overdo it. I like the pose. The whole Golden wings for flight thing…. Since when does she need wings to fly? I like the use of the Flag. And if you ever wondered if Diana flosses now you will be able to tell.
THEY SAY:
DC DYNAMICS: SINESTRO Statue
DESIGNED AND SCULPTED BY TIM BRUCKNER

DC Direct's exquisite statue gallery series featuring dynamic interpretations of classic superheroes continues into 2011!
Award-winning sculptor Tim Bruckner has transformed his original designs of the most recognizable DC heroes into some of the most outstanding, upscale statues DC Direct has ever produced. Each statue features a base that captures the character's interaction with the surrounding environment.
In this seventh statue in the series, Sinestro rides the swirling yellow waves of fear, seeping into every pore, spreading terror in a cloud of dread.
This hand-painted, cold-cast porcelain statue measures approximately 12" high x 6" wide x 3" deep and is packaged in a 4-color box.
Limited Edition.
$ 195.00 US On Sale April 27, 2011
I SAY:
First let me say that I like what they have done with Sinestro. Anything that got him out of blue/black marionette outfit I am good with. But I am getting tired of seeing him. That said, this looks like Mr. Bruckner did a great job. He has a good high forehead. The menacing teeth are a nice touch. The paint looks very nice. The amazing thing is his ring hand and the light formation around it. It will make a neat piece.
THEY SAY:
DC SHOWCASE SUPERMAN/SHAZAM: THE RETURN OF BLACK ADAM DVD SHAZAM! Maquette
Sculpted by Derek Miller

"In your times of need, simply call on me." — SHAZAM!
Chosen by the wizard SHAZAM! to be the world's protector, young Billy Batson becomes the World's Mightiest Mortal. Battling alongside Superman against the nefarious Black Adam, Billy quickly discovers the challenge that all Super Heroes ultimately face – is he fighting for justice? – in this brand-new extra-length short. Four more favorite DC Comics Super Heroes – Jonah Hex, Green Arrow, Black Canary and The Spectre – face challenges of their own in this All-New Collection.
This hand-painted, cold-cast porcelain maquette of SHAZAM! is based on art from the highly anticipated Warner Home Video made-for-DVD animated original short, SUPERMAN/SHAZAM: THE RETURN OF BLACK ADAM!
Measuring approximately 9" high x 5.25" wide x 6.5" deep, this statue includes a 4-color Certificate of Authenticity and is packaged in a 4-color box.
Limited Edition.
*Quantities may be allocated
$ 99.99 US On Sale November 17, 2010
I SAY:
I am excited about these shorts and the characters they chose. I am also grateful that Captain Marvel is getting some action. I really like when He and Supes are together. When his character is written right, he can be one of the coolest cats around. In regards to the statue, I like the color scheme. I like the tunic being outlined in yellow. The cape looks cool, but may be missing the Moley’s. I am a bit old-fashioned in this, but I do like my Cap without pupils and squinty. As face sculpts go, it is good; however it does look very close to an alternate universe Superman. Honestly you just can’t pass up Cap stuff.

WOMEN OF THE DC UNIVERSE: SERIES 3: HARLEY QUINN Bust
Designed by Amanda Conner • Sculpted by Jim Maddox

Puddin' Pop!
Harley Quinn's a sucker for her Puddin' – even at the cost of her own sanity – whatever sanity she has left, that is! Sitting atop a defaced deck of cards, the Queen of Crazy has had her heart broken one too many times. With a sly look, Harley's ready to bite off a slice of sweet revenge.

I SAY:
Of course I have to have this. Cool concept. I love the base. And that coy expression is beguiling. I am curious as to the detail of the sucker.
THEY SAY:
AME-COMI HEROINE MINI-FIGURES: SERIES 2: CHEETAH MINI-FIGURE

They may be tiny, but they are mighty… mighty cute, that is!

The Wonder Woman Mini-Figure stands at 5" high and is Packaged in a 4-color window box with J-hook, each non-articulated PVC mini figure is sold separately, and includes a display base
On Sale April 13, 2011
I SAY:
Personally I don’t like this style of figures. And some of the character concepts are just too weird for me (bordering on creepy. I do hope they will be cheap for those of you who want them. They look almost unfinished to me. They call Donna a bullets and bracelets pose? I don’t get it. Maybe it’s the angle, but it looks like she is pulling her own hair and enjoying it too much and her eyes seem a bit off to me. And with WW it says that’s an ax on her shoulder? I thought it was an armored butterfly. Her boots look like something out of the Bayonetta video game. I hope these look better in person like many of the Batman Black and White statues do.
That’s all they have for us this month. There is some really cool stuff.
I was hoping for more History of the DCU figures or a cool new 13inch. Also missing a Damien Robin.
When I am able to get some pictures I will be posting some of the new leads.
Remember to go your comic shop next week and look in the previews for yourself.
Until next time:
Stay extraordinary.

8/16/10 DIAMOND SELECT TOYS: MARVEL SELECT - THING REVIEW!One of Marvel Selects latest offerings is the heart and soul of the Fantastic Four, the ever-loving blue eyed Thing.
My first impression was WOW This dude is heavy!! (and I don't mean this in the 60's sense). I mean he could weigh 5 pounds. Even if I didn't like him as a figure, I would keep him as a door stop or a paperweight!

It is a very good thing that he did not look this way when he was first exposed to the cosmic rays, that over the years he has continued in his transformation. I say this because had he looked like this when he was first exposed they would have called him “Pinhead” rather than “Thing”. This was my second impression, the figure is spectacular in scale and mass, except his head is tiny for his body. I can take my hand put it on my face with the bottom of my palm on my chin, my fingers reach nearly to the top of my forehead. I feel I am mostly normal. Look at Ben's hands! He could hold 2 of his heads in his massive fist. This is the only real complaint I have with this figure. Aside from scale, I like the sculpt of his head. Good expression and good paint job on his baby blues. Aunt Petunia would be proud.

I like the fact that he is huge. It is obvious he is the anchor of the FF in more ways than one. But if He wants to wear his traditional overcoat to blend in, he will need more than unstable molecules, he will need a tent and a big one at that. What he is wearing, is long pants with shoes. Why does Ben need shoes? Is he really in danger of stubbing a toe? Or getting a splinter? The ground cover must really be dangerous in the Negative Zone.

His articulation is more than you would expect in a guy made out of rock. I mean I have never thought of Ben as agile, have you? He has joints at his waist, shoulders, wrists, elbows, knees. His pea head can turn side to side and up and down.
Ben comes with a, well fake TV? I thought maybe it was supposed to be a backdrop but the scale is just as off as his head. In fact his head is the right size for the backdrop. It is a piece of cardboard with one side picturing the rest of the FF and man they look ticked (maybe because Ben got a figure first?). The other side is a street scene that doesn't look anything like Yancy. And a molded plastic … not sure, whatever… I would say “thing” but that would be in bad taste, anyway it is an accessory.

Ben is packaged well with wrap around art work.

Also included in the package is a polite Marvel select advertisement and questionnaire.

Here he is with Killowog. They started a friendship at a nail salon specializing in people with 3 HUGE fingers. Notice the head sizes.

Here is Ben in alternative uses:

Here is Ben trying to get the Batman's autograph.

Here is Batman politely declining.

See guys, I do like Marvel.
I would like to thank www.CollectorsComics.net for providing Ben. Check them out at their ebay store under the seller name: keimoncollectables. They have lots of cool statues and hard to find stuff.
Until next time, refuse to fit in, be extraordinary!

8/06/10 MCDONALD'S HAPPY MEAL MARVEL TOYS!I went and bought a whole set. There are 8 in all and I paid $1.80 each.
I won’t be doing anything in depth but I do hope to inspire you to go out and partake. (Pick me up a cheeseburger while you are out.)

They come in plastic baggies with some minor instructions and ad for Marvel Digital Comics. There is also a box not pictured here but it does have one side with Marvel related art.

The 8 in numerical order are:
1. Iron Man who has a bump and go type engine inside.
2. Hulk has a lever by which you can pound his fists together.

3. Spiderman has VERY weak magnets in his hands so he slides down the frig like he got sprayed by the Spider Slayer.
4. Wolverine has retractable claws operated by a button on his back. They don’t always go back in.
5. The Thing has an audio player in him, that when you switch it on you hear a crash and “It’s Clob”… well you know.
6. The Human Torch (or as my wife likes to refer to him, “flame boy”) looks very similar to a figure that Burger King did a few years ago. This one however has a button that will light him up.
7. Captain America (not the current one but classic) has a shield that you can attach and twist him at his torso and launch it (sort of).

8. Silver Surfer who…surfs. All he does is attach to the board via two pegs.
Well there you have it, so so pics, close ups of my hands and all.
Well get out there and get some!!
