Hope the holiday season is going well for you, as well as having survived, er, finished your shopping by now.
The holiday season and the end of 2011 also brings us new movie trailers for up-coming 2012 big-budget blockbusters. And THOSE give us a preview of the toys of 2012! (Like how I worked toys and movies together?)
So let’s take a look at what’s coming to screens and toy shelves in the very near future but in no particular order of release date:
It looks better than GI JOE-THE RISE OF COBRA… which means something. Right?
While I’m glad to lose Marlon Wayans’ Ripcord (like ANYONE should have a chance with Scarlett other than Snake-Eyes!), we are also losing Destro, Baroness AND Cobra Commander! Who’s gonna do the dirty work then?!
Zartan and Firefly?! Really? REALLY?!
The first movie I enjoyed because it reminded me of the 70′s Bond films. It was larger than life and didn’t shoot for realism; why have an arctic base or an underwater base when you can have BOTH! But trying to use the Transformers formula of trying to middle-of-the-road the movie for kids who want toys and adults who wants action, didn’t work for it. So I’m worried about this one as well. But the images of COBRA taking over the White House, the wonderfully ludicrous cliff-face sword fight, the Killer W.H.A.L.E. crusing & the Rattlers in flight do make me smile. (Those BETTER be Rattlers!)
As if there’s any doubt for a Hasbro produced movie, we will get figures, both 3 3/4′s and 12″ figures would be my easy guess, along with vehicles and playsets. I’ll be interested to see if Sideshow does anything with it, but I have my doubts.
I just hope Willis can help it along.
RELEASE DATE: June 29, 2012
This is one that just makes me scratch my head and wonder “why?” Then again, there are alien invaders, hi-tech military weapons fired up and things do blow up real good. So this must be from the Transformers school of film-making! I even think they are using a similar “tech” sound design for the aliens as our favorite Robots in Disguise!
Then again, the last movie alone has made over 1.1 BILLION dollars, so who am I to say they’re wrong.
I just hope Liam Neeson got a serious paycheck for this.
No word on what toys will be made, but it’s a movie produced by Hasbro-do I if have to really guess if toys will be made?! Best guess is that we’ll get figures, aliens and vehicles, as well as a new board game. I’ll go out on a limb and say we might see some 12″ GI Joe tie-in figures.
So will we get a preview for Chutes and Ladders-The EXTREME Movie soon?
TOYS: Hasbro (at least the board game!)
RELEASE DATE: May 18, 2012
Ever since the footage was shown at the end of Captain American-The First Avenger, I have been ready with money in hand to see this! And I want to know almost NOTHING going into seeing it if I can, though a few spoilers have come my way.
I am a fan of the work of Joss Whedon but I am admittedly a little worried about his doing such a major movie. There’s a lot to juggle in the story and a lot riding on this movie and he’s only directed one feature film to date. That being said, I have faith that he will do what he does best-give strength and humanity to these epic characters. Even if there is no tween super-powered girl in this!
Some people have mocked the trailer for its Transformers-esque look of random cars blowing up, but I don’t have a problem with that. This is the teaser trailer; it SHOULD be designed to bring in those people who have no idea about super-heroes but do love their action & destruction. (See again $1.1 BILLION dollars for Transformers-Dark of the Moon) You don’t need to get the superhero fans excited; you need EVERYONE else to come aboard!
And Hasbro would never turn down the chance to bring out MORE Marvel figures, in the Marvel Universe scale and the return of Marvel Legends! Marvel Select is already soliciting Hawkeye and Hulk. And Hot Toys is in it as well: “Now, we are proud to present the license of the 1/6th scale and 1/4th scale collectibles of The Avengers movie!” Having already done 12″ figures of Iron Man, Black Widow, Thor, Loki and Captain America, it’s hardly a surprise, so expect we’ll see them again along with a Hawkeye likely, perhaps a Nick Fury. But will Hot Toys supersize to give us a proper Hulk? Time will tell.
Now to figure out how many screenings to see on opening day…

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN
I’ll be honest: I really don’t care about this movie.
Not hate. Just… apathy.
Between ditching director Sam Raimi & the entire cast, then rebooting along with my general malaise towards the character, there’s nothing jazzing me about this movie. That being said, I like what I see in Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker. He comes off as less nerd and more introverted loner. And he looks appropriately high school age, which is odd by cool. And while I’m always happy to see Emma Stone, I think she would’ve been a better MJ. And I do wonder if they are going with Peter’s parents being spies as there were in the comics? (at least they were at one point. Everything is so retroed nowadays who knows!) I have a feeling, though, that I’ll be in the minority and MANY will go see the film.
Same thing for Hasbro that I said about figures for The Avengers. There is no way that the license holder for Marvel toys & action figures WON’T have figures coming out! If true to form, we’ll probably see the first figures come Spring 2012. Marvel Select has already announced its first figures of Hulk and Hawkeye. I haven’t heard anything about Hot Toys yet, but I think an announcement will come by early 2012.

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES
I have seen just enough footage to not know what in blazes is going on- and I LIKE IT!
Writer/Director Christopher Nolan has suckered me in each film and I was glad for it! As much as I enjoyed the first one, The Dark Knight really is a amazing movie all-around, not just as a “superhero” movie. That opening bank heist though the attack on the mayor’s funeral is pure 70′s thriller right there. The masks and costumes are almost secondary to this story. How do you top that? I surely don’t know, but that’s what making me look so forward to this film! (My theories-Somehow this becomes a version of Frank Miller’s “The Dark Knight Returns” or Man of Steel’s Superman will come into play! Remember-these are the theories of a madman and NOT FACT!)
Again, I’ve no doubt that Hasbro will NOT be rolling out the action figures again for this third movie installment. Hot Toys has confirmed themselves for the third installment: “Besides the 1/6th scale collectible figures, we will be bringing to fans with the vehicles series too! Apart from the 1/6th scale collection, we are again stepping our foot into the specially developed 1/4th scale collectible figures!”
And maybe Hot Toys will bring back the Tumbler again… in desert camo.
