Hey, it’s the Sliding Lock Man flying in to help out Doc Owen with some of the Green Lantern movie toy backlog that are clogging up his toy shelf! First off we’re going to take a look at the second set of Wal-Mart exclusive Guardian two-packs, sets #4, 5 and 6. Set 4 is Abin Sur and Ganthet, set 5 is Green Man and Scar, and set 6 is Tomar-Re and Herupa.
The packaging is identical to what we saw in the first three sets, with a big window on the front and character art and bios on the back. Each set comes with a Lantern accessory; this time around we get two plain green Lanterns (I guess they’re supposed to look like they’re glowing?) and one green and black Lantern.
The three GL characters are absolutely identical to their single-figure counterparts. There is no difference at all between the single-card Abin Sur, Tomar Re or Green Man figures and the ones you get with the two-pack. As for the Guardians, from the neck down they are completely identical to the three Guardian figures we got in the first wave (and, of course, to each other.) What we do get is three new Guardian head sculpts. And they’re terrific. Each one is completely unique and very well painted. They all have that translucent layer around the top and back that makes it seem as though the Guardians are fading into another dimension or something. Really nicely done. Unfortunately there is still no body for the Guardians. They’re just empty robes with arms and heads.
Articulation is what we have gotten used to with this line. GL figures have six points: neck, waist, hip, and the ball-jointed shoulders. Guardian figures have even less: just three points, shoulders and neck.
So are they worth it? I hate to say it, but…probably not. All you’re really getting for your money is three new Guardian heads and some lantern accessories that admittedly aren’t available with too many other figures. If you’re a dedicated completist who just has to have the whole cadre of Guardians of the Universe, then go for it. Otherwise, save your money and join me in hoping that the sequel has toys that are a whole lot better!
